My first SepiaSaturday – a great idea and I’ll try to do more of these.
Dad has been
digitising their extensive old photo collection for a few years and I spent a
lot of the Christmas period at their place with my new Flip-Pal scanning some
more.
My grandfather,
John Raikes GARRETT (1908-1992) loved the beach.
He often talked fondly about
his family’s beach shack at Black Rock in Victoria.
Here are a
couple of shots of him:
One as a dashing
20ish year old, not at the beach but wearing what I assume is his bathing
costume (well, I hope it is).
The second is in
very different attire – a suit! Playing with his daughters at the beach.
Fantastic start Jackie. Looking forward to seeing the rest :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Sepia Saturday. Love the photos -- doesn't everyone wear a suit and tie to the beach? (I got a Flip-Pal for Christmas too, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.)
ReplyDeleteI have quite a few photos where we are all dressed up at the beach - must talk to my parents about this.
DeleteAs for the Flip Pal - how could you wait!? I couldn't wait to get it out and have been through two sets of batteries already! Have fun.
A further Welcome to Sepia Satrurday. You will find it great fun to participate in, "meet" fellow contributors, share comments and enjoy their stories and photographs.I look forward ot reading more posts.
ReplyDeleteThis swimming suit is amazing!
ReplyDeleteIt sure is! It must be from before he was married - I can't imagine my Nanna ever letting him wear it after she came on the scene - she was such a modest lady.
DeleteInteresting photos. Your Grandfather was a hansome man. Are you related to Phil Van Bergen? http://ttocb.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI'm a van Bergen by marriage and there isn't a Phil in our immediate family. My husband's family migrated to Australia after WWII.
DeletePerhaps your husband is related. I don't know how common the surname is. I thought it was a strange co-incidence as I found out about Sepia Saturdays indirectly from Phil's blog!
DeleteGreat pictures and such a contrast in swimwear! Although both outfits could be woollen.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, hadn't thought of that - but one would look so much worse when wet I think :)
DeleteAn interesting pair of pictures. I haven't heard of a Flip-Pal before.
ReplyDeleteIt's a portable scanner - here is the website: http://flip-pal.com/
ReplyDeleteWelcome from me too. Your photos strike a chord with me, especially the beach shot. I never saw my father on a beach, but my father-in-law always seemed to be wearing a suit. You have rremined me of some shots that I have posted before but now can't trace.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Sepia Saturday, Jackie. We know each other from my blog post about Dutch ancestors.
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents also went to the beach fully dressed. There must have been a time when bathing suits did not exist yet. Haven't got a clue when those came into fashion.
A great start to SS with such wonderful pictures of your handsome Grandfather. I too have a photo of my Dad in a shirt and tie on the beach - I can only assume that we had just arrived at our holiday destination after travelling.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I wonder if you realise that you have Word Verification switched on? Most of us have turned it off with no ill effects as long as you have moderation enabled (It sometimes puts people off making comments).
Welcome, Jackie! Loved your pictures, and I am your newest follower.
ReplyDeleteKathy M.
Welcome! I love the contrast - swimsuit at home/suit at the beach.
ReplyDeleteLet me just echo the chorus of welcomes you already have had. I am sure you are going to enjoy being part of this strange Sepia family we have established, and, with great old photos like these, we are going to thoroughly enjoy having you on board.
ReplyDeleteWelcome from Netherlands. Enjoyed your pictures too. I surfed for the Flip-Pal and found it. Think I put it on my wishlist.
ReplyDeleteWelcome, what awesome photos, of your granddad! Glad to see you join in and looking forward to more!
ReplyDeleteWelcome! Gosh, I sure hope you're right about it being his bathing suit.
ReplyDeleteWhat a contrast, to see him in a suit at the beach.
Flip-Pal huh? Sounds like something I could use!
