Sepia Saturday - My great grandmother's face

A 'study across the years' of my great grandmother's face for Sepia Saturday

Constance Edith TERRY was born Jun 1871 in Melbourne to Alfred TERRY and Emma Augusta FARMILO nee HODGES.

She married Frederic Arthur FITTS (1864-1902) in South Yarra on 23 Nov 1892 - the approximate timing of the first photograph - and one that I am lucky enough to have the beautiful large framed version of.

After Frederic's death by drowning, she married my great grandfather Lewis Raikes GARRETT in Surrey Hills (Vic) on 30 Apr 1905. Possibly the timing of the second photograph.

She died in St Kilda in Feb 1925 at the age of 53 years, and leaving 8 children between the ages of 12 and 31. The third photo is taken much later in her life.

I'll write more about her another time but I haven't been well and just wanted to get something up to get back in the habit of blogging.

  1. I suspect the first portrait's a little later than you have suggested - the pompadour hairstyle and the shape and ornamentation of the blouse suggest to me that it was around or shoretly after the turn of the century.

    1. Thank you Brett. The photo just has 1890s on it, so I guess it is maybe 1899 then?

  3. I like the idea of grouping a series of photos of one person throughout their lifetime. Your great-grandmother was lovely and aged very well, I'd say. She didn't change a great deal, but unfortunately she died before those big changes that accompany old age.

  4. A lovely collection of photos.

That is alot of children, as was typical in those times. However, I cannot imagine having a child at age 41. I wouldn't have had the energy.

  7. Only 53 years old when she dies. Two husbands, eight children - what a lot in such a comparatively short life.

  8. Glad you are feeling better. It takes some effort to get back to blogging after an absence - at least I find it does. Nice to see these pictures of your great-grandmother over time.

  9. A beautiful woman. A shame to have died so young - young in terms of today's standards. She did seem to age very well, despite what must have been a challenging life.
